Volunteer OpportunitiesMentoringThank you for your interest in volunteering with Computers4Kids! If you would like to consider volunteering on an ongoing basis, we are actively seeking mentors. Mentors are matched with a middle or high school student and they work together on a variety of projects on the computer. Projects range from learning how to use databases to designing and building a website. Mentors do not need to be computer experts. If you know your way around the basics of a PC and the internet then you'll have no problem working with our students. We encourage students and mentors to learn together as they try out new software and test their technology skills. Mentors meet with their student a total of 36 hours or 1 hour per week until they have completed 36 total hours of mentoring (this usually takes about 9 months), and the student then graduates from our program. Mentors who are in college usually meet with their student 1.5 hours a week. In addition, we schedule special workshops for students (i.e. training on using Powerpoint, Photoshop, etc…). Volunteers can lead a workshop previously designed by C4K staff, or design and lead a workshop of their own. We welcome your creative input, and the workshop times can be scheduled based on your availability. Workshops are usually 1-2 hours in length. If you would like to take advantage of any of these opportunities, please fill out the volunteer application here. After receiving your application, a Computers4Kids staff member will contact you to further discuss your volunteering interests. All C4K volunteers are required to complete a background check (done at C4K), and volunteers interested in mentoring are required to attend one 2 hour training session. Volunteering for Computers4Kids is a great way to be a positive role model and to help our students challenge themselves, become engaged in their own learning, and realize greater possibilities in their lives! We look forward to working with you. Refurbishing If you are comfortable with computer hardware, and building and fixing computers, refurbishing may be the thing for you. Refurbishers prepare all donated computers for distribution to students and provide maintenance and repairs for students' home computers. We ask refurbishers to commit to at least four hours of volunteer time a month. The refurbishing lab is generally open Monday through Friday between 10am and 7:30pm. In order to get started, please submit our online application found here. www.computers4kids.net/forms/volunteer.After we receive your application we will contact you to schedule a one-hour orientation session.
